The mountain is covered with snow from January to March. Thus it is a popular site among locals and foreigners for hiking, skiing and mountain climbing. The highest point of the mountain is the Black Peak, it reaches 2290 meters.

The mountain also has a very popular nature park visited by people quite often. It is the oldest nature park in the Balkans. The Duhlata- 17.5 km long cave, the longest in Bulgaria, is also located here.

Bus lines and rope ways make Vitosha easily accessible. You can use Simeonovski gondola lift to get there from Sofia. Take bus 122 or 123 and take off at the last stop. Here you are, in front of lift station. A roundtrip per adult costs 15 bulgarian lev(~9 USD). The trip takes 30 minutes.

Sofia's Kopitoto TV Tower also stands at the mountain. It is 186 meters high. It opens up the best view of Sofia city. The tower is most easily accessible by car.

Both the road to the mountain ad hiking the mountain is something you have to try. Going with the car up you see many nice local places you can visit. And hiking is not as easy as most mountains, with many small and dangerous paths to go to the top. Especially mid-way there are some tricky parts. Atleast if you don't take the tourist way.

You can't leave Sofia until you have visited this mountain. From the city centre, take bus number 88 then change to 123 to get to the lower cable car station in Simeonovo. Then take the Simeonovo Cable Car to get to the top of the mountain (8lv for students, both way). There are few stations on the top but don't jump off from the cable car until you reach the last station. The journey lasted approximately for 30minutes. I really enjoy it and that was the most enjoyable visit that me and my friend had apart from some bad encounters while we were at Sofia!

Vitosha is the safe haven for overworked people from the capital. It takes up to half an hour to exit Sofia and walk up the beautiful mountain pathways. You will quickly notice the difference in air quality and if the day is clear enough, you can catch a beautiful view of the smog hovering above Sofia.
