Kartlis Deda

Mother Georgia

Sololaki Street, Tbilisi

Kartlis Deda or Mother Georgia is a national monument in Tbilisi. The statue was erected in 1958 at the 1500th anniversary of Tbilisi. The designer of the statue is Elguja Amashukeli. The aluminium statue is 20 meters tall.

Kartlis Deda symbolizes Georgia character. The statue holds a bowl of wine and sword, as symbols of hospitality for friends and protection from enemies.

Kartlis Deda stands on Sololaki hill overlooking Tbilisi and the Mtkvari River near the 4th century Narikala Fortress. If you want to take a closer look at the monument you need to climb up the hill or take a ride at aerial tramway. Note that the steps leading to the top are at some places very narrow. The most convenient way is to take a cable car ride via aerial tramway from Rike Park terminal. A one-way ride costs just 1 GEL(0.40 USD).

A huge statue you get to see from many of the lower areas in Tbilisi. Use the cable car to walk up to see this statue, the Botanical garden and the Narikala Fortress. You get better pictures of this staue from far.

Mother Georgia is located on top of a mountain and we can reach there through a chairlift or by car. It's next to the narikala fort and botanical garden. This statue has a special status for Georgians . It holds wine in one hand as welcome for friends and a sword in the other for enemies.

It was very good. Me , my wife & my brother go there about one month ago. It is established in 1985 on the top of Soloulaki peak because of 1500th anniversary of Tbilisi.

If you want to take void pictures of old Tbilisi you must visit this place. Either with cable way or walking. I would recommend to make ,,round trip" using pass just below this statue. Enjoy my town ;) Yes, some times you will find Georgians a little bit strange, but if you try to understand local culture, Georgia will show to you what real hospitality means. ;)

I think visiting just the statue on its own has nothing special to offer, however, you can get some nice views of Tbilisi there. You can take a short cable car ride to top of the mountain and then walk up to the Mother of Georgia. She has sword in one hand a wine in other as symbol of defending the country with weapon from enemies but as the time welcoming friends with wine. It definitely need restoration as it looks worn out from close view. If you are looking for a Georgian souvenir, I would suggest checking out the local wood artist on the way to Mother of Georgia. He has amazing skill and you can get something original and noncommercial to remember Georgia while supporting a talented man.

Better viewed from old Town Tbilisi. You can't get far enough away to get a good pic as the ridge she stands at is pretty narrow.
