Marienplatz

Marienplatz 1, Munich

4.5

Marienplatz is the heart of Munich. The name Marienplatz means St. Mary’s Square. Since 1158 it used to be the main square of Munich. The square has lots of interests to see. Right in the center of the square is the large column called Saint Mary’s column. Each corner of the column you’ll find 4 statues of putti (male children). The other fascinating parts of the square are the Old Town and the New Town. The new town is a great example of Gothic style. The New Town Hall has a small balcony (Glockenspiel), where the bells ring every day at 11:00 am and 5:00 pm and the figures perform the cooper’s dance. The Old town hall there’s an 85 m height tower, which has historical importance. It served as a way to protect Munich. Visiting Munich, there is no need to plan a special trip to Marienplatz as every road will lead you here. Wander around the square’s territory, and you will meet both historical and modern buildings, churches like Peterskirche and the Frauenkirche, lots of cafes, shops and restaurants. Before your leaving try to get something from the nearest shop, which will remind you of your Marienplatz visit. The shops not so cheap, that’s why search and find a proper gift for you or your relatives.

Pleasant, if small, mideval town hall and square. Usually crowded, with a couple performances and attractions going on. The clock routine is nice, though similar to those in most European central squares. Many tourist-trap eateries and shops all around, all good fun.

Beautiful place in centrum of Munich that you just cannot skip if you make a visit. Big square full of different restaurants and stands during day. It can get a bit crowded but that is no surprise consider how beautiful are the surrounding buildings. Moreover if you walk in any direction you find plenty of other amazing sights in the central Munich.

I've been here countless times and it's never lost its magic! The historic centre of the city is incredibly beautiful with great shopping and dining in the surrounds. One of my favourite places in Munich.

We spent most of our time here. It was about a 45 minute train ride from our hotel which was at the airport. The train was €24,60 compared to a taxi, which would have been €56. Most of the top sights are within walking distance from this train station. Lots of shops and good food.

Amazing place for all kinds of people. Shopping paradise for ladies. Drinking paradise for gents. All sorts of variety can be found here. My recommendation to everybody is to always once try the Haufbrauhaus beer. An amazing experience. This place is great to spend your time. Must visit once if you are in Germany.

Reaching Marienplatz at night. Getting down at Marienplatz station and coming out of the End in station one is immediately struck by the beauty of the city square. The mix of modernity and heritage. The city council hall on one side and the commercial plaza on the other. A beautiful sight to behold

I went during the Christmas time for the Christmas markets. The experience was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone who loves Christmas. There were many things to look at and buy, the food was delicious and it felt so lively. It's a very enjoyable experience for the family and once again, I would totally recommend going for the Christmas markets.

A busy central place in Munich, be prepared for a crowd and loud church bells. There are many stalls selling roasted nuts so there's always a lovely smell on the walkway. There are several clothes shops high street brands and some designer for the eager fashion shopper as well as Saturn the massive electronics store. There's definitely something for everyone.

An excellent place. I was there on a cold but so sunny and bright Winter day (29th December 2017). The place was so lively and dynamic. From morning to night. Close to the station and to the stores. Simply great. Germany's best

Don’t do lunch or dinner on the square, walk a bit down any street and the prices literally are halved.

Be careful not to get hurt in Silvester night during fireworks show. Stunning views is what you get in return of this risk.
