Marienplatz 1, Munich

Marienplatz is the heart of Munich. The name Marienplatz means St. Mary’s Square. Since 1158 it used to be the main square of Munich. The square has lots of interests to see. Right in the center of the square is the large column called Saint Mary’s column. Each corner of the column you’ll find 4 statues of putti (male children). The other fascinating parts of the square are the Old Town and the New Town. The new town is a great example of Gothic style. The New Town Hall has a small balcony (Glockenspiel), where the bells ring every day at 11:00 am and 5:00 pm and the figures perform the cooper’s dance. The Old town hall there’s an 85 m height tower, which has historical importance. It served as a way to protect Munich. Visiting Munich, there is no need to plan a special trip to Marienplatz as every road will lead you here. Wander around the square’s territory, and you will meet both historical and modern buildings, churches like Peterskirche and the Frauenkirche, lots of cafes, shops and restaurants. Before your leaving try to get something from the nearest shop, which will remind you of your Marienplatz visit. The shops not so cheap, that’s why search and find a proper gift for you or your relatives.

Already when you leave the train station you're impressed of the buildings surrounding you. The atmosphere is nice even if there are a lot of tourist. Most impressive was the town hall with its tower and all that small or bigger details. Munich council does a good job in keeping everything nice and clean.

Ranging from fancy restaurants and plenty of shops, to nice views and architecture. If you are hungry and want something cheaper and fast, you may want to try the fastfoods from the metro. You could also enjoy some time relaxing on the benches, or even spend your time in the small shops from underground. Moreover, from here you can reach almost any part of the town.

Frankly, I have mixed remarks on Marienplatz. The clock has two shows every day, 11am and 12 noon. Weekends has an additional 5pm show (if I am not wrong). But it's just not worth the trouble. The icons just move in circles and do nothing more. You are better off exploring the building inside which has some amazing architecture and stain glass windows. Beautiful architecture on the external and internal of this building. Must visit.

Marienplatz is the centre of Munich's old historical city (Altstadt). Surrounded by modern and traditional architecture, its gorgeous New City Hall flanks one entire side. The clock tower contains the famous Glockenspiel which plays daily at 11am and 5pm, plus 12 noon during the summer. Ascend the clock tower by elevator for a small fee for great 360 degree views (tickets are sold at the information office downstairs and to the left of the tower entrance). Marienplatz subway station exits right into the huge square, and the famous Fish's Fountain can be found here.

It’s a great spot to grab a drink or bite to eat and relax. In the early morning, it tends to be quiet but it will pick up around 1000-1100 and become a bustling spot and common location for tour groups to meet. Enjoy the people watching and city hall architecture before moving onto your next Munich adventure.

The New Town Hall of Munich appears to be the main hub. We consider it a main touristic point of Munich. Beautifully put together, the construction soon attracts attention for its imposing neo-Gothic style building. Additionally, there are lots of figures and details, especially for the famous clock called "The clock chimes". Hundreds of people gather in front of the building hoping to witness clock chimes and the famous rotating figurines. These represent the history and the legends of Munich. We enjoyed simply standing in front of Marienplatz and admiring the architecture. The facade is very beautiful and interesting, quite unique compared to other cities we've visited. Consider visiting Marienplatz at 11h, 12h or 17h to experience the rotating figurines. We also recommend you enter the centre square of the building to witness it's inner beauty. Happy discoveries ! Our Ratings Serge: 4+ Eli: 4+ Recommend: Yes, really beautiful square and the hub for many discoveries in Munich.

Great place to hangout over the weekend. The Munich bell at the Civic center is a crowd puller. There are literally hundreds of places of sit relax and enjoy a leisurely meal or drink. Some very old breweries are around for you to taste craft beer.

This is such a nice area! Enjoy the open market, the architecture and live music. I picked up several snacks and walked to one of the many near by parks for a picnic. Within walking distance is the opera house and the location that Hitler gave many speeches which aren't as busy as the town hall and cathedral. All are worth seeing.

A scenic spot at the historical city center. Snap a picture and fan out from there or sit and enjoy a drink or a meal at one of the restaurant's outdoor patios. You can reach this landmark directly from the underground (subway) as the station is directly below the iconic old Town Hall.
