New Town Hall (Neus Rathaus)

Marienplatz 8, Munich

New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) is a town hall which is situated in the northern part of Marienplatz, Munich. It was built in neo-Renaissance style from 1905-1910. Nowadays it is the seat of the Mayor of Munich the head of the municipal administration. It is also a place where the political bodies hold their sessions, receptions for official guests of the city and art exhibitions are held, the "Citizen's Office" is also here. The doors of the town hall are always wide opened to all visitors. One of the tallest buildings is also a favorite touristic place. Annually lots of tourists come here to see such wonders as Holder Hall, with its monumental mural painting "Unanimity," or the Ladies Hall, which is near the Mosaic Hall with its noble decor and many other wonderful works of art. The town hall also has a restaurant called "Gartensaal" (Garden Hall). It offers regional and international cuisine in a stylish atmosphere. In the summer the large patio is also available for guests of the restaurant, who wish to enjoy a good meal and the splendid view of the pond and park before them. If you happen to be in Munich, this place surely must not be missed. Tower viewing platform is open from November to April, Monday to Friday 10 am to 5 pm.

Very interesting baroque building, with high tower. There is also a restoraunt inside, with good traditional german food. Free wifi too.

Cool historic building with an interesting clock tower that chimes at 11:00am and 5:00pm with figurines that dance around.

The old building serves as an impressive welcome to the square. The clocks on the tower are outstanding.

Neus Rathaus (New Town Hall) is a large Neo-Gothic building that dominates Marienplatz in the Old Town. Constructed during the second half of the 19th-century, this is one of the most beautiful buildings in Munich. The building stretches the length of Marienplatz and features a detailed facade richly decorated with Gothic features and statues of the Wittlesbach dynasty. It includes an impressive 85 metre tall clocktower where you find the famous Glockenspiel, a ornamental chiming clock which performs every 11am, 12pm and 5pm (during warmer months). This is so much fun to see, hear and experience and makes a rewarding addition to the already impressive building. I really enjoyed spending time admiring the exterior architecture of Neues Rathaus. It is a impressive Neo-Gothic building that is well remembered from our recent trip to Munich. As indicated above, it is worth timing visits to Neues Rathaus so that you can enjoy the Glockenspiel performances while you are there. Then spend the rest of your time seeing the monuments, fountains and other attractive buildings at Marienplatz.

Beautiful architecture! Great view of the city center (Marienplatz, St Peter Church, Frauenkirche, etc) from the observation deck of the tower. You can get there by an elevator, no stairs. The fee is 3 Euro. Tickets are sold at the nearby Information center.

This amazing town hall building is located just near the exit of Marienplatz U-bahn station. Very convenient. I had to evade a road-cleaning vehicle operated by a grumpy looking German man while taking photos here. Protip: the whole Munich inner city at Sunday mornings are VERY QUIET. Come here during that time to experience an atmosphere unlike any other. That, if you can deal with the road cleaner.

The town hall is a marvellous building. Its main tower is equipped with a nice carillon which turns while producing music in some moments of the day. Visiting the internal yard and the inside of the building is recommended.
