Basilica Papale San Paolo Fuori le Mura

Piazzale di San Paolo 1, Rome

The Papal Basilica of St. Paul outside the Walls (Italian: Basilica Papale di San Paolo fuori le Mura), commonly known as St. Paul's outside the Walls, is one of Rome's four ancient, Papal, major basilicas, along with the Basilicas of St. John in the Lateran, St. Peter's, and St. Mary Major. The Basilica is within Italian territory and not the territory of the Vatican City State. However, the Holy See fully owns the Basilica, and Italy is legally obligated to recognize its full ownership thereof and to concede to it "the immunity granted by International Law to the headquarters of the diplomatic agents of foreign States". James Michael Harvey was named Archpriest of the Basilica in 2012.

A beautiful Bascilica of Saint Paul. The Bascilica is open daily from 9am - 5pm and is free of cost. It is easily accessible by Metro from the San Paulo station and even from Garbetella (a longer walk). The Original Bascilica was burnt in the past and the new one is build exactly on the same place. Alot of the original Marble is used to reconstructe the New Bascilica. It is one of the 4 Important Basilica's of Rome. There is a huge celebration out side the Bascilica on the Feast of Saint Peter and Paul. The Bascilica also contains the tomb of Saint Paul , a part of the tomb is visible behind the glass. The chains used to hold Paul are also on display. The Bascilica is beautiful and breath taking. There is also an old monastry beside it but the entry is charged.

I recommend going to see Paul’s “sarcophagus.” I walked there from the south side and walked through a super trashy part of Rome. I wish I would have bus hopped there.

You know what, here I was more excited than in Coliseum. Peace and silence 😌

Excellent monument of medieval culture and architecture. Place of religious pilgrimage and veneration. Another must see place at Rome. If you pay three euros you will be able to visit small but excellent pinacoteca. Visitors are allowed to take non commercial photo without flash light.

Entry to St Paul's Outside the Wall is free. There is no long queues waiting to get in. The architecture is amazing with real gold painted ceilings and cornices. Like all tourist sites in Rome, the Basilica was watched over by the 'Carabinieri', armed military police to help guard against potential terrorist attacks.

Right after St Peter's, it's the most incredible basilica i've visited. Absolutely gigantic, as awe-inspiring on the inside as it is on the outside. Beautiful statues on the garden outside, majestic space on the inside. A landscape mark and a monument full of story and meaning in honor of one of the central pillars of the catholic church, St. paul.

The most overlooked of the four papal basilicas. This basilica is farther from downtown Rome and receives the least amount of foot traffic. If you are looking for a church to quietly pray and reflect in Rome, St. Paul Outside the Walls should be your first option.

Away from the crowds and noise of Rome this basilica is worth the short metro ride and spend a few hours admiring its beauty. It has well maintained gardens and an enormous beautiful interior.
