Ponte dei Sospiri

Piazza San Marco, 1, Venice

Ponte dei Sospiri or The Bridge of Sighs is a famous landmark located in Venice. The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone, has windows with stone bars, and passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the Prigioni Nuove to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. It was built in 1600. The Bridge of sighs was the last view that criminals of the city saw, before they went to the prison. That’s where the name comes from. Lord Byron was the one to called the bridge in that way. The legend says that lovers will be granted eternal bliss if they kiss on a gondola under the bridge at sunset while the bells of St. Mark's Cathedral toll.

Beautiful bridge and view. Interesting story behind (read about it and it will make it a much better experience). The bridge from which you view il Pomte dei Sospiri is always crowded so try to visiting it in a early time in the day and bare the pickpocket

Beautiful bridge crossing the canal with a sombre history. It must be one of the most famous bridges in the world and a must see on a visit to Venice. It can be viewed either by gondola, where you pass under it or from the side viewed from another bridge.

Founded in 400 AD and built on a north adriatic lagoon, Venice is an amazing city to visit. Steeped in history and art, it's romantic canals, gothic architecture and great seafood are sure to please.

A nice bridge of beautiful stories. Better if you could go though the bridge itself rather than staying outside taking pics.

The bridge joins the Doge’s palace to the prisons. It’s quite an eerie feeling crossing it and it’s apt name conjure up the feeling of abject terror the prisoners must have felt when being sent down. Cross it, and you are walking in the footsteps of Casanova. From outside of course it is a beautiful marble-faced piece of architecture, but such an iconic location that it’s hard to get a decent picture because of all the tourists taking selfies in front of it.

Beautiful! Our tour guide gave us lots of interesting information. This place wouldn’t be as great without a tour guide though.

Some have commented that it is small - and you could miss it! It is. But it is a fantastic part of human history and beautiful architecture!
