Peter and Paul Fortress (Petropavlovskaya Krepost)

Petropavlovskaya Fortress, 3, St. Petersburg

Peter and Paul Fortress (Petropavlovskaya Krepost) is the very first establishment built in the city. Locals call it the city was born. Meant to defend the city, the Fortress never really worked as initially intended.

It has a long history of being used for a military base. It even served as a host to the state departments. The grounds of the fortress in some areas are used for the burial of the Russian Imperial family. And like these weren’t enough the place was used for multiple other purposes. One being the use of the establishment as a dungeon for few political prisoners.

Today part of the Fortress is given to the St. Petersburg Museum of History. The latter presents temporary exhibits about the compound’s past. To cut it in a nutshell, there is so much to do within the walls of this attraction, one cannot get bored.

Very informative spot to visit. The island houses the Peter and Paul Cathedral and several other historic museums, including a Bastion prison and the city museum. If you only visit one spot here, I highly recommend the Peter and Paul Cathedral, one of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen.

The only reason I wanted to see the Peter and Paul Fortress was Fyodor Dostoevsky. He is my favorite Russian author (IMHO, his best books: The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov) and I wanted to see where he had been imprisoned. Our guide, a Russian, knew nothing about Dostoevsky. How can you by Russian, grow up in Russia and know nothing about Dostoevsky? I grew up over 6000 miles away from Russia and I know about Dostoevsky. My asking him questions about Dostoevsky and his not knowing anything would be tantamount to me not knowing about Mark Twain. We fired our guide! Although, I thought about recommending he go read The Idiot, but I refrained. Wheelchair users: You should always call ahead to find out if there is wheelchair access to bars, clubs, museums, and restaurants. In most cases the answer, sadly, will be in the negative. Alternatively, assume it is inaccessible and hire a few people to lift you and your chair up the stairs, and then be sure to pay very generously for the assistance.

Beautiful island. Within the thick walls there are several museums and exhibition halls and an impressive church, with a golden altar and housing marble graves of the tsars. Well groomed paths inside and outside the walls and a small sandy beach.

Good fun for a family. Ceremonial dressed soldiers & band march to the "cannon firing" ceremony at 11.00. The church is pleasant & tastefully embellished. The old prison barracks/block was sad. Didn't know that Lenin's boy was incarcerated there & eventually hanged. Big mention of Gorky too. As fotresses go, it's interesting.

If you're on a budget avoid hoi g inside but take the entrance and go to the river just behind this.... You can thank me later cause its a really good spot to sit or just stand there and enjoy both the city and the Fort view... Remember you have to enter the venue and not buy the ticket and just walk to the back side...

Wonderful place to visit and cheap for students! I spent 5 hours here and saw everything, the cathedral, Commandant house and prison are the best museums - definitely pay for the audioguide as there's little information otherwise.

This was really great to go through! There were so many rooms filled with very good information. I did make a joke and put my arm around a mannequin to which an old woman that worked there yelled at me and then followed me around for the next five minutes. I couldn't help but laugh!

Great place, if you can get there on Saturdays then you can see the military show and hear the big gun firing up in the air. You should stop at the restaurant called Korushka and try that fish, it is similar to Smelt, but different. You should visit Peter the Grade resting spot if you can and his statue, it is one of a kind and really interesting looking one.
