Wat Phra That Doi Kham (Temple of the Golden Mountain)

Mae Hia Subdistrict, Chiang Mai

4.5

Wat Phra That Doi Kham is a holy temple in Chiang Mai. The temple dates back to 7th century and stands on top of a hill. The temple is famed for housing a 17 meters high Buddha image. The name of the temple is translated as "golden mountain temple".

The oldest structure found at the temple is the chedi (a dome-shaped Buddhist shrine), that was constructed in the 7th century. The chedi keeps a sacred relic of Buddha. According to the legend it is Buddha's hair, that is now enshrined in the temple’s chedi.

Another highlight are the huge golden colored mythical cobra statues that guard the stairs at the entrance to the chedi.

The temple stands at the top of the Mount South West 10 kilometers away from the Chiang Mai center. To get there you need to hire a taxi that will wait for you and then take you back. Bargain and agree on the price before you sit.
The temple grounds are open every day from 6 am to 5 pm. Admission is free.

A lot of people here. You can see panoramic city view on top of the mountain.

Compared to Doi Suthep, it is a 2 stars away for its grandeur and scenery. It was not crowded in Wednesday. No admission fee like Doi Suthep. Nothing else to write about

A nice temple. A heck of a walk if you decide to climb the stairs. However, as I was lazy drove to the highest level car parking facility and with a little difficulty, did find a car parking space. A very popular destination with locals and tourists alike. The morning is perhaps the best time to visit. The heat of the day has yet to hit as there are very few sheltered areas to get out of the sun. A number of souvenir shops, lottery and small eating places are always on hand. I have heard that farang get charged a higher price than the locals for the same products. My advice, go with a local and let them get you the item, just in case there is this discrepancy. Certain areas of the venue do need a little bit of care to clean up the rubbish that has been tossed to one side. This problem exists all over and not just aimed at Thailand. A well worth visit. On a clear day the landscape from the walled parts are stunning. A very photogenic place indeed.

good experience with no entry fees and a lot of less people than on Doi Suthep which looks just like some festival, busses of tourist pouring in from every direction. It’s not a huge place however you can enter everywhere, you can ring the bells and so on. And in the neighborhood there are gardens or the night safari so you can plan ahead and do all the three things together.

If you like temples fine. If you don't you'll hate this one. Extremely crowded & congested. Extremely heavy selling techniques. Can be really hot. There is a lot of trash & plenty of annoying insects. Nowhere really to relax & find peace if you're in any way claustrophobic or just like open space. ( ironic for a temple)

Great & wonderful place to give a respect to buddha. Two ways to here by walk on very long stairs and by car to parking lots. good view on top.
