Apollo Theater

253 W 125th St, New York City

The Apollo Theater at 253 West 125th Street between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard (formerly Seventh Avenue) and Frederick Douglass Boulevard (formerly Eighth Avenue) in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City is a music hall which is a noted venue for African-American performers. It was the home of Showtime at the Apollo, a nationally syndicated television variety show which showcased new talent, from 1987 to 2008, encompassing 1,093 episodes. The theater, which has a capacity of 1,506, opened its doors in 1914 as Hurtig & Seamon's New Burlesque Theater, and was designed by George Keister in the neo-Classical style. It became the Apollo in 1934, when it was opened to black patrons – previously it had been a whites-only venue. In 1983, both the interior and exterior of the building were designated as New York City Landmarks, and the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is estimated that 1.3 million people visit the Apollo every year.

Its like a party - you can't help but have a great time. The MC, dj and other staff are so professional they rope you in and make sure you have a blast. Amateur night on Wednesdays is fantastic and so affordable - date night or just friends poonight out its fun. The other shows that are put on there are great too.

Loved coming here as a kid! Talent Night was the best shows. I met The Rock and Monique and the Apollo. This is truly a Harlem landmark.

It's a must visit on anyone's NYC bucket list. A historic theater in the heart of Harlem. Doesn't matter where you sit, you have a great view of the stage. Showtime at the Apollo with Steve Harvey hosting is magic! (Be aware any free events will have a very long line but it's definitely worth it once you're inside.)

I attended top dog and the talent was mind blowing. The youth that competed that night was fantastic. It was very hard to choose just one winner. The adult performance we're just as equally talented. There is no bad seat in the house. This was my first time and I will return again in the future.

I first entered the theater for the Wednesday night AMATEUR MIGHT show, hosted by Capone ..... Immediately a nostalgic feeling overwhelmed me as I walked down the storied hall to the tall oak doors. The view inside is worth the trip to NYC on its own merit. The next night was the night of my show, inside the Apollo Comedy Club. Headlining such a major show in such a major venue was validating, to say the least. The staff is incredible.. From Alice, to Mr White, Mr. Walter, Anthony, & big Wayne... even my dear Ms Gloria...... all under the command of Mr Dwight Jordan.... a man who goes beyond the extra mile to facilitate the artist's every whim ..... And the entire event is produced by the Apollo's "Curator of Comedy" .... the legendary Bob Sumner. I am blessed to have attended such a historic edifice #BlaqRon

So, as a young adult I spent a lot of time watching show time at the Apollo. The Apollo Theatre is an iconic place, located in the heart of Harlem (125st). The staff is great! I was seated in the back and so the stage seemed far away lol. While I was there all I did was reminisce on everything I saw on the telly. To visit this place is an honor so be sure to check it out.

This legendary place is much smaller than it looks on television but it was lovely to be inside in person. We went for amateur night and it was amazing to be there.

We won a tour of the Apollo in an auction. It is an amazing place and Billy Mitchell "Mr. Apollo" shared the stories and the pieces of the theatre with us in a once in a lifetime event. We were so blown away with the history of this place and it is on my bucket list to return when there is a show there. Wow, worth the trip to go for sure.

That was a great evening, full of fun, laughter and love. I had a great time, watching new talent. I have been in New York for nearly 4 years but this was memorable, really special. Comedian Capone was totally awesome. Thank you Apollo.
