Apollo Theater

253 W 125th St, New York City

The Apollo Theater at 253 West 125th Street between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard (formerly Seventh Avenue) and Frederick Douglass Boulevard (formerly Eighth Avenue) in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City is a music hall which is a noted venue for African-American performers. It's the home of Showtime at the Apollo, a nationally syndicated television variety show which showcased new talent, from 1987 to 2008, encompassing 1,093 episodes; the show was rebooted in 2018. The theater, which has a capacity of 1,506, opened in 1914 as Hurtig & Seamon's New Burlesque Theater, and was designed by George Keister in the neo-Classical style. It became the Apollo in 1934, when it was opened to black patrons – previously it had been a whites-only venue. In 1983, both the interior and exterior of the building were designated as New York City Landmarks, and the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is estimated that 1.3 million people visit the Apollo every year.

Great shows. If your going to a show that's for studio audience where you see live performances televised be patient. If your not extremely early there will be a line going around the corner to venue. They will hand tickets as you wait on the line. You must have an invitation in order to have a free ticket. Use the bathroom before seating it's going to be hard if your in the middle of rows going in and out. Easy to get to by train or bus. Driving can be insane it's meter parking. Parking lots are in the area but not any. Best bet get a Uber/cab/taxi. They do have paid shows that are usually awesome. Small bathrooms. So go when you know no one else will. Enjoy!

The legendary Apollo Theater has not lost its importance. I've seen so many wonderful shows here from independent artists to Oprah. The yearly Kwanzaa festival is always heart-warming, Amateur night is an interesting experience, and the Apollo Music Cafe has some great smaller acts as well. As a tall woman, I struggle a bit with the lack of leg room in the balcony seating and even more so with the lack of ANY room in the balcony restroom stalls. But even that's not enough to make me want to give less than 5 stars.

I had one of the best times ever. The host is amazingly funny. The acts were good. The DJ was good as well. Seats are small and compacted together but it was worth it. I could feel the history.

Absolutely wonderful entertainment. The building is gorgeous from the inside. We got late seats and sat in the very last row, on the right. No need to worry! The sound and line of vision was perfect! The show was hysterical. I don't live in America, but the humour is light and witty and appeals to all. I also love that you buy your drinks inside - credit cards accepted! The ushers are also feisty characters and start getting you in the festive mood from the get-go. If I lived nearby, I would try and go at least once a month!

Great place for entertainment, and to see artist. They have an Amateur Night that the audience's get to rate. Prices are reasonable for entrance fee, senior/children discounts. For a night out with laughter and fun, I recommend it. Check online for event , time, and interest you want.

Its like a party - you can't help but have a great time. The MC, dj and other staff are so professional they rope you in and make sure you have a blast. Amateur night on Wednesdays is fantastic and so affordable - date night or just friends poonight out its fun. The other shows that are put on there are great too.

Loved coming here as a kid! Talent Night was the best shows. I met The Rock and Monique and the Apollo. This is truly a Harlem landmark.

It's a must visit on anyone's NYC bucket list. A historic theater in the heart of Harlem. Doesn't matter where you sit, you have a great view of the stage. Showtime at the Apollo with Steve Harvey hosting is magic! (Be aware any free events will have a very long line but it's definitely worth it once you're inside.)

I attended top dog and the talent was mind blowing. The youth that competed that night was fantastic. It was very hard to choose just one winner. The adult performance we're just as equally talented. There is no bad seat in the house. This was my first time and I will return again in the future.

I first entered the theater for the Wednesday night AMATEUR MIGHT show, hosted by Capone ..... Immediately a nostalgic feeling overwhelmed me as I walked down the storied hall to the tall oak doors. The view inside is worth the trip to NYC on its own merit. The next night was the night of my show, inside the Apollo Comedy Club. Headlining such a major show in such a major venue was validating, to say the least. The staff is incredible.. From Alice, to Mr White, Mr. Walter, Anthony, & big Wayne... even my dear Ms Gloria...... all under the command of Mr Dwight Jordan.... a man who goes beyond the extra mile to facilitate the artist's every whim ..... And the entire event is produced by the Apollo's "Curator of Comedy" .... the legendary Bob Sumner. I am blessed to have attended such a historic edifice #BlaqRon
