Bethesda Fountain

Midpark at 72nd St. Transverse, New York City

Bethesda Terrace and Fountain overlook The Lake in New York City's Central Park. The fountain is located in the center of the terrace. Bethesda Terrace is on two levels, united by two grand staircases and a lesser one that passes under Terrace Drive. They provide passage southward to the Elkan Naumburg bandshell and The Mall at the center of the park. The upper terrace flanks the 72nd Street Cross Drive and the lower terrace provides a podium for viewing the Lake. The mustard-olive colored carved stone is New Brunswick sandstone, with a harder stone for cappings, with granite steps and landings, and herringbone pattern paving of Roman brick laid on edge.

You have most likely seen it in many movies. The place is as picturesque as in the films. Every corner and a memory from a film.

I was pretty disappointed with the terrace area underneath. Did not live up to my life expectations. The fountain itself and the boats were nice.

The terrace is most artfully designed with magnificent detailing within the stone structure. For further review; see the fountain listing. Truly magnificent 💝💝💝 Do Like 👍👍👍Always love 💜💙💜

We did a family trip to NYC for the 4th. On Location Tours offered a walking tour and this was our favorite spot. The lilies were in full bloom and just lovely. We took a few selfies and had some ice cream!

Very beautiful section of the park. Perfect place to take a nice walk with your family, or special someone. Plus you can do the classic "make a wish with a penny". This was actually the first time my girlfriend and I did that and was very special.

One of the most easily recognisable landmarks of Central Park is Bethesda Terrace, a beautiful arcaded structure and fine example of 19th-century architecture situated between The Mall and The Lake in Central Park. The creation of British-American architect Calvert Vaux, visitors are treated to a grand terrace, with a large bricked surface, nicely carved bridge, arches, staircase and walled structures. Bethesda Terrace is highlighted by an attractive, large-scale fountain and beautifully decorated and tiled under passage. Both of which are worth many pictures during time spent at the terrace. In the end, this is a neat area to spend half an hour during visits to Central Park, particularly when the fountains are turned on and the trees in the area are in bloom (spring) or with foliage (spring-autumn). With limited time in the park, its still worth passing by Bethesda Terrace if you can.

Terrific views of Boathouse (restaurant), lake Bethesda Fountain & house carriages. Plus: Bubbles Performers, musicians, & back rubs.

There are hundreds of things to do and see in Central Park, but Bathesda Terrace and Fountain are two essentials, predominantly because they are so recognizable and an essential part of the park. They are very centrally located, so from here you can go to the boathouse for lunch or boat rentals, to the Met, to the Natural History Museum, or to other locations within Central Park. Another key feature is that they have public bathrooms available for use here. It does get quite crowded during peak hours with tourists, street musicians, and other performers, so if you are looking to take pictures here, I would recommend early in the morning or in the evening on an overcast day when the terrace is lit up.

I always make it a point to drop by everytime I visit Central Park. The view is amazing any time of year. This place and the statue of the angel were featured in the opening credits of the miniseries, ‘Angels in America’, with the last scene zooming in to the face of the angel. Very neat scene (and very good show too!).

Bethesda fountain and arcade is a wonderful meeting point in the southern area of Central Park. The view over the fountain and the small lake behind it is quite lovely from the top of the arcade which itself has a gorgeous mosaic ceiling .
