1681 Broadway, New York City

4.5
The Broadway Theatre (formerly Universal's Colony Theatre, B.S. Moss' Broadway Theatre, Earl Carroll's Broadway Theatre, and Ciné Roma) is a Broadway theatre located in midtown Manhattan. It has a large seating capacity of 1,761, and unlike most Broadway theaters, it is actually located on Broadway, at number 1681. Designed by architect Eugene De Rosa for Benjamin S. Moss, it opened as B.S. Moss's Colony Theatre on Christmas Day 1924 as a venue for vaudeville shows and motion pictures. The theater has operated under many names and owners. It was renamed Universal's Colony Theatre, B.S. Moss' Broadway Theatre, and Earl Carroll's Broadway Theatre before becoming a legitimate theater house simply called Broadway Theatre on December 8, 1930. In 1937, known as Ciné Roma, it showed Italian films. For a short time during the 1950s it showed Cinerama films. On November 18, 1928 the first Mickey Mouse cartoon released to the public, Steamboat Willie, debuted at the Colony. Producer Walt Disney returned on November 13, 1940 to debut the feature film Fantasia in Fantasound, an early stereo system. The legitimate theater opened in 1930 with The New Yorkers by Cole Porter. Stars such as Milton Berle, Alfred Drake, José Ferrer, Eartha Kitt, Vivien Leigh, Zero Mostel, and Mae West have appeared on stage. The Shubert Organization bought the theater in 1939 and renovated it extensively in 1956 and 1986. It has long been a popular theatre for producers of musicals because of large seating capacity, and the large stage, which is nearly sixty feet deep. Often plays that have become successful in smaller theaters have transferred to the Broadway Theatre.

Whatever you do, you HAVE TO watch a Broadway or off Broadway show, it is just a must even THE most important part of visiting NYC. You can book your tickets online of from the same theater where the show is done. I lived magical moments watching The phantom of the opera. Note that you cannot take any photo during the performance, you have around 20 minutes break and you are not allowed to bring any food inside!

Amazing experience in NYC! I only spent 3 days with my wife for first time in NYC, so we had so many things to see, but I have mo doubt enjoying Broadway show was one of the best moments in NYC! We watched the famous Phantom of the Opera. At the beginning I was not sure to understand everything because of my language skills, but finally I totally went into it! Really worth the money, 2 hours show in a wonderful place!

Walked by the theatre last night 6/10/18, and noticed new mega-sign display of classic performance of King Kong on Broadway. Looks awesome, from outside while glancing upward. And the sign is also. done in classic black & white. It may very well be a new spectacular play. Perhaps, extremely worth it to pay a visit.

Amazing theatre saw Miss Saigon and it was just incredible the stage is huge and the accoustics are very good we could hear everything plainly the cast was superb and the helicopter on stage at the end was a stunning finale to the show. Tickets from half price booking office on Time Square. Recommend

I went here on a senior trip in 5th grade to watch "Aladdin" the musical. The seating arrangements are amazing. The sound quality from the back row as well as the view are better than I expected. In the interior, there are snack bars and gift shops as well as multiple fast food refineries nearby (3 min walk). For instance, after my class finished the show, we went to Applebee's. I think everyone should go to Broadway to see a show one day or another. The only thing is that the tickets are a bit expensive, I payed about $95. Other than that, it's very astonishing!

Beautiful theater near Times Square. Seating well arranged for a clear view of the stage. Leg room a little tight.

This review is about the theatre not the shows. Old theatre. Many stairs and steps to get to your destination. Not handicap friendly. Not many places to sit while waiting for show. Seats are very cramped and not real comfortable. Only one handicap bathroom on first floor for 1 person at a time. If you wish to go down a flight of steps there are regular bathrooms. If your seats are on the higher level more steps and bathrooms. Lobby is real crowded before shows and intermission. Building inside is beautiful and ornate. Old time theatre at it's best.

SPECTACULAR SHOW!!! 5 STARS IS NOT ENOUGH. DEE SNIDER WAS PERFORMING AND THAT WAS A WONDERFUL SUPRISE FOR ME BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW WHO WAS IN THE CAST. THE THEATER ITSELF IS BEAUTIFUL AND SPACIOUS. SEATS KINDA SMALL FOR US AMERICAN FOLKS BUT THE USHERS WHO SHOWED US TO THOSE SEATS WERE FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. VERY CLEAN AUDITORIUM. A+
