Gershwin Theater

222 W 52nd St, New York City

4.5
The Gershwin Theatre is a Broadway theatre located at 222 West 51st Street in midtown-Manhattan in the Paramount Plaza building. The theatre is named after brothers George Gershwin, a composer, and Ira Gershwin, a lyricist. It has the largest seating capacity of any Broadway theatre with 1,933 seats. Designed in an Art Nouveau style by set designer Ralph Alswang, it is situated on the lower levels of a towering office complex built at an estimated cost of $12.5 million on the site of the historical Capitol Theatre. It opened as the Uris Theatre on November 28, 1972 (named for the building developer Uris Buildings Corporation) with the musical Via Galactica starring Raul Julia. It proved to be an inauspicious start for the venue, with the first show to lose a million dollars closing after only seven performances. From 1974-76 it served as a concert hall for limited engagements by a number of legendary pop music and jazz performers. The American Theatre Hall of Fame is located in the lobby. During the 37th Tony Awards ceremony held June 5, 1983, the theatre was rechristened to honor the Gershwins. The Gershwin has been home to the blockbuster musical Wicked since 2003.

During my three-day vacation, subconsciously from seeing so many Broadway advertisements I decided that it's a must to see at least one Broadway performance. I've always wanted to watch the performance of Wicked, so presently being at the heart of NYC I was given the opportunity to attend it, plus, it was literally a block away from where I stayed. I was super giddy and excited just like every other event that I was able to attend while in NY, but watching Wicked's performance was my highlight in NY. It was impressive, in fact, it was more than I had even anticipated. The performance from the Wicked cast was absolutely fabulous. Not to spoil anything, but I did get the feels and tear up. The cast was phenomenal! The plot of the story, actors/actresses, singing, stage set, special effects, costumes and overall act will unquestionably tug at your heart and have you feeling all kinds of emotions. I am 100% jovial that Wicked is the first Broadway show I chose to see.

Just saw "Wicked".! Amazing.!!! The theatre itself is well designed and fairly comfortable. They have wine and beer beverages you can take in. Girls should use the restroom before intermission as the lines are way too long for them!!! The pay was 2hrs 45 min. Intermission was 15 min.

What is there to say, it's the Gershwin! We saw Wicked there about a month ago with the kids and left with a memorable experience. The views are very good from almost anywhere. The building is well laid out, and there is plenty to check out within the building before or after the play. If you have kids, try to plan bathroom breaks wisely. Not so bad for guys, but the lines for the women's bathroom were very long.

Well thought out Theater. Great angled seats. Enjoyed Wicked with my family. They have a bathroom attendant in the womans bathroom to help point out empty stalls and move things along efficiently, making a huge difference for ladies during intermission. Love the history of the theater and the way it is decorated.

Enjoyed our time at Wicked. Theater seats were comfortable and roomy. Attendants were helpful and friendly throughout our evening. The theater could use a few more washrooms, as the lines stretched out and wrapped around the rotunda for both the women's and the men's.

Work was being done to the outside of the Gershwin but the interior looked good. The staff were all great and Wicked was fantastic! We thoroughly enjoyed the play. While we did have great seats, I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. The stage is large and well lit. The sound system was good and not overly loud. Seeing Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre was a great experience and I do recommend it.

Great place to visit if you are near Times Square. If you like Broadway Musicals dont hesitate to catch one here. We took a quick trip to NY so that my daughter could watch Wicked as a graduation gift. She absolutely loved it. Visiting Gershwin Theatre was a great experience for us all.

Absolutely amazing experience! I went with my husband to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. We both love musicals and Wicked was our top choice. So glad we went. The theater was beautiful and clean. It was the best performance I’ve seen. You can tell the actors love their jobs and that they put so much love into what they do. I’ll be back very soon!

Visited to see Wicked midweek at 7. The theatre is comfortable and you have plenty space in the seats. Was originally unconvinced about going to the theatre as it's not normally my kind of thing but was convinced that we should do it while in New York. The show itself was a pleasant surprise and was really funny the two main characters were fantastic and the actress playing Glinda (Amanda Jane Cooper) in particular made the show. She Was really funny and got big laughs throughout and had a great voice would definitely recommend

Big theater slightly off the busy Broadway theater district. They feature good productions and theatre staff are very organized. Great comfy seats but might have leg room issues for taller people. Watched 'wicked' there and it was an amazing experience
