New York Public Library (NYPL) is a public library system in New York City. With nearly 53 million items, the New York Public Library is the second largest public library in the United States (behind the Library of Congress), and fourth largest in the world. The library has branches in the boroughs of Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island, and affiliations with academic and professional libraries in the metropolitan area of New York State. he New York Public Library has four research libraries which are open to the general public as well. The library was developed in the 19th century, founded from an amalgamation of grass-roots libraries, and social libraries of bibliophiles and the wealthy, aided by the philanthropy of the wealthiest Americans of their age. A number of innovations in recent years have been criticized. In 2004 NYPL announced participation in the Google Books Library Project. By agreement between Google and major international libraries, selected collections of public domain books would be scanned in their entirety and made available online for free to the public.

My favorite spot in NYC, this place is amazing. Give yourself a break and enjoy the amazing building and its unforgettable decor. This place is a must go, hell, it was much better than the museum of natural history (unless you really like stuffy, warm crowded places).

Another incredible building, most people will only appreciate it for the structure itself. If you get a chance to go inside, and go up to the upper floors and see some beautiful architecture inside. This is a wonderful, free attraction for anybody who's visiting the city, it's worth taking a few minutes to go inside and look at the structure.

The best library system in the world, in my opinion. It supports well over 80 branches around the New York area and a myriad of programs for children and adults alike. Let us not forget to mention their expansive and steadfastly growing digital library. You can order your library card online and access the digitized books from the comfort of your home. However, nothing beats the experience of being physically there. It is not just a library, it is a highly sophisticated system which provides free access and education.

“a quick stop at fabulous architectural building...!!” - IT'S FREE...!! best reason to go??? ;) right in the middle of the city, near to Bryant park/times square. make a quick stop and get it done in 1-2 hrs. as per title, the building is awesome. If you are not interested in the library, go for its architecture. New York Public Library is the second largest public library in the United States over millions of books and its branches are in Brooklyn and Bronx. Do check out lions outside the building. it's awesome.!!see pics for more

Magnificent architecture and beautiful design details! The information desk is so welcoming and helpful. If you visit there, please start from the 16-min movie... nice guide and overview. RM 315 is the famous reading room. Don't miss it!

PROS: Staff was kind and helpful, and I was easily able to find what I was looking for (books on history), and was easily able to do what I wanted to get done. It is extremely easy to get to, and had a beautiful building, inside and out. It is also a great place to read, or just hang out. CONS: Tourists are always roaming the place, block entrances, and act above us locals who use the library. Also, books can take awhile to come to the main reading room from the book storage floors below ground.

Love the readings rooms esp 3rd floor. Great for studying and big project days. Very well managed and monitored for noise policy. They will escort you to a study room if you are talking out loud . Yes ! Folks come in and attempt to carry out one on one tutoring in an open quiet space, very inconsiderate...the staff ensure that they restore a quiet environs quite quickly! Love this place!

The building architecture looks like an Art Gallery or museum in Paris and when you enter, you feel like you are in a beautiful art gallery. The upper floor has some amazing art on the walls and on the roof which makes you forget that you are in library. At the time of my visit there was an interesting photography exhibition on display which made the library tour quite interesting and unique. It's a must visit attraction if you are in Manhattan.
